About this property

Welcome to The White Hart

Set within a 15th-century half-timbered coaching inn, The White Hart offers a distinctive historic ambiance just a two-minute walk from St Albans Cathedral. The location is convenient for exploring local attractions such as Verulamium Park and St Albans City train station, making it suitable for visitors interested in the area's rich history and cultural sites.

The hotel provides low-key, characterful rooms that reflect the building’s Tudor origins, including some uneven flooring and steep stairs, which may pose challenges for guests with mobility issues. While the decor and furnishings maintain an old-world charm, some guests have noted that the rooms could benefit from updates to improve comfort and modern standards.

Facilities include a bar and a restaurant serving Tudor cuisine, known as Tudors at the White Hart, praised for its atmosphere and quality of food. Guests can enjoy breakfast options and free Wi-Fi, with the property maintaining a smoke-free environment and welcoming children and pets. Room service is also available, though there is no pool, fitness center, or airport shuttle on site.

The White Hart appeals to travelers seeking an authentic historic experience rather than modern luxury, with feedback highlighting friendly and helpful staff as well as the hotel’s unique period features. Its central position in St Albans, close to landmarks and local markets, makes it a practical choice for those prioritizing location and character over extensive amenities.

We enjoyed our stay here very much like stepping back in time to a more romantic period in history, the rooms are what you would expect of a Tudor period dwelling with squeaky floorboards bespoke fittings, we didn’t try the food but Bar is fantastic and very old world like a living antique. The staff were lovely and made a new friend Bert as in Photo.

Me and my fiancée stayed here for 1 night, The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. This is a haunted hotel and we could hear a few different noises happening throughout the night, like children running around in the hallway, which was exciting. It's a really historical building and the decor is set to match. It's in town and is around 2 minutes walk from the street market. All in all We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.

The staff on the Sunday were really good, very helpful. Sunday lunch, yummy . Not too good if you have mobility issues as the stairs are a bit steep in places and ladies loo up a flight of stairs but otherwise I liked it

This is a hotel that has been active since the 1400s. Rooms were large and the beds were fine. Given the age of the building, the flooring is uneven(might be good to know for people with mobility impairments). I had booked this place months in advance. There is an optional breakfast for 12 pound per head. Make sure you clarify your breakfast plans beforehand.

We stayed in the four poster room, bed so comfy! It’s an old quirky hotel and the floors are uneven but we loved it and would definitely go again! Breakfast was so nice, with cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit juice and the full English breakfast was lovely! Thankyou

What a beautiful unique experience! Highly recommend for all of the reasons. The room, reception, bar and restaurant are what you would expect for 15th century architecture and vibe. It's not the Hilton but if you want to experience that historic vibe and a few fun history lessons along theway, than this is your stay. The bed was comfortable and the room had all of the amenities. A little on the smaller side and floor uneven but it totally works! The staff was so kind and beyond accommodating! We will be back! So close to the cathedral and all of the shopping and restaurants. Enjoy your stay!

Great little hotel in a 800 year old building, right opposite the cathedral and just a short walk from the center of St Alban's. Friendly staff, great pub food and the building itself is full of character. The rooms could do with a refurb as everything is a bit dilapidated. Comfortable and clean, just needs a refresh.

Great lunch with the family! The food was fantastic - service great too. I would suggest a little festive music or soft jazz in the background ;) I love the interior of the dining room, would return. Thank you

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RESTAURANT NOT THE HOTEL Very nice establishment. Great staff and service. I had a small issue with my main (it came with pork which wasn't in the menu description) but it was instantly rectified. It was a quiet dining room with lots of character. Suitable for special occasion dining, couples, groups of friends or, indeed, solo. Highly recommend

Lovely old place! Great place to start off if you were visiting, directly opposite the cathedral so if you like your history it's great! Along time since I've eaten here but was good then and I'm told it's still good!
